Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month! A new study came out last Friday claiming 1 in 88 kids suffer from Autism. That is up from 1 in 110 kids from last year. Studies are showing a 23 percent increase in children diagnosed with Autism in the last two years. My neighbor helped out with Autistic kids at the nearby elementary school and I have so much respect for her and those kids she helps. There are a ton of different levels of Autism, but it is still a debilitating disease that affects every aspect of life for those that suffer from it. Therapy is really starting to help children with Autism, but not the level we hope. Only about 10 percent are showing noticeable difference in behaviors with therapy. But show your support by wearing blue, putting in a blue porch light, and learn more about autism at autismspeaks.org.

  1. Why the rise in autism? Is it some environmental factor, or is there a lack of diagnostic reliability?

  2. I really don't know. I was looking for that answer and all I got is theories. I personally think a good number of it is that because our medical field is aware of autism and it is now "common" it is more quickly diagnosed. I am not sure if all of those diagnosis are correct, but it seems similar to the gluten intolerance influx we had the past year or two.
